Each original watercolour often took up to a year to complete, as Irene worked meticulously with a magnifying glass and fine brush to capture every subtle nuance — a testament to her extraordinary patience and skill.
The History
Margaret's Buildings in Bath was built in 1769 by John Wood the Younger as part of his grand plan for the expansion of Bath, creating a historic Georgian pedestrian street between the Circus and the Royal Crescent. They were built as a paved street of shops with residences above, catering to the elite of Georgian society.
The buildings are likely named after St Margaret's Chapel, which stood nearby from the 1770s until its destruction. An entrance to the chapel, also designed by John Wood the Younger, was located on Brock Street, near Margaret's Buildings.
The buildings feature typical Georgian architecture, including limestone ashlar facades and sash windows. Vaults run beneath the buildings, extending under the pavement, which are a common feature in historic Bath architecture.
Although damaged in the Bath Blitz of 1942 the area has maintained its commercial character, evolving from Georgian-era shops to a present-day hub of independent shops, cafes, antique stores, and art galleries.
Many of the buildings being Grade II listed.
