Anita Woods

Anita Woods is a contemporary Welsh figurative artist based in Mid Wales, widely recognised for her evocative mixed-media paintings that centre on animals, landscape, and mythic imagination. She is an elected member of the Royal Watercolour Society of Wales, a distinction that places her within a respected lineage of watercolour practitioners in Wales.

 

Woods works primarily in watercolour and mixed media, often layering materials and experimenting with unconventional surfaces to expand the expressive potential of her medium. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in place: she lives and works in Ceredigion, where the coastline of Cardigan Bay, the Cambrian Mountains, and the surrounding rural environment are a constant sources of inspiration. 

Her subject matter reflects this environment. Woods frequently paints animals—foxes, hares, birds, domestic pets—alongside atmospheric landscapes and seascapes. These are not merely observational studies; they are infused with narrative and symbolism, often drawing on Celtic mythology and folklore as well as the emotional resonance of music, which she cites as a recurring catalyst for imagery.

Woods has exhibited widely across Wales and beyond, including repeated selection for the Wales Contemporaryexhibition (2020, 2022, 2023) and participation in Royal Cambrian Academy exhibitions. Her solo and group shows—such as By the Light of a Magical Moon—demonstrate both her productivity and her growing presence in the Welsh art scene. In addition to exhibiting, she runs workshops and painting retreats, reinforcing her role as both practitioner and educator. 

Throughout her career, Woods has maintained a consistent commitment to exploration. She describes her practice as an ongoing journey, emphasising experimentation, discovery, and the evolving relationship between medium and subject.
